CEO Michael O'Leary really loves those Boeing 737's
Ryanair has announced they are breaking off negotiations with Boeing over purchasing 200 737-800’s. In early November I talked about how Ryanair was threatening to stop growth from not being able to reach an agreement with Boeing. The CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary said the airline did come to an agreement, but Boeing is “unwilling to incorporate some other terms and conditions from our existing agreement into this new aircraft order,” O’Leary says. Of course O’Leary won’t elaborate what those details were.
Is this a real threat? I don’t think so. First off Ryanair already has a fleet of over 200 Boeing 737-800’s and is still planning on receiving over 100 more over the next three years. There is no way they are going to add another aircraft type or convert their entire fleet to Airbus. O’Leary also said he might be willing to re-open negotiations next year. Well, next year starts in about two weeks.
Ryanair is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and it wants to continue its growth. Going after Aer Lingus isn’t working out so hot for them, so they need more planes. I am sure Boeing knows this and isn’t going to let Ryanair bully them around. Boeing already has 152 orders for the Boeing 737 and has delivered 336 so far this year. Yes, another 200 would surely be a good thing but it is not like Boeing needs the orders to keep the 737 rolling.

Print that ticket at home, or it could cost you $150 to get into that door!
If you follow Ryanair or Michael O’Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, you know there is always something going down in Ryanair-land. Well, let’s step this up to the next level of craziness. In the good ‘ol days (aka now) you only have to about $60 for printing your boarding pass at the airport. But O’Leary doesn’t like check-in counters and wants people to stop getting boarding passes at the airport.
“You really now must check in before you get to the airport. If you don’t the fine is €40 [~$60] and if that doesn’t get rid of them all within a very short order, we double that fine to €100 [~$150],” said Mr O’Leary. “We don’t want people showing up without the pre-printed boarding card.”
If you don’t have a printer at home, it would be more cost effective to go out and buy a printer for $50, print your boarding pass, and pocket the $100.
This might not shock many of you, but complaints on Ryanair are up 140% and they have the highest number of complaints in the UK (although they are one of the biggest airlines as well).
But if you want to complain to Ryanair, good luck! It costs about $1.42 per minute to talk to a customer service representative. I am sure they will have no problem, sitting back listening to your complaints and even ask follow up questions.
Why do people keep making this airline successful? Because they want the cheapest ticket possible, period. Will there ever be a backlash with passengers realizing price isn’t everything? Or will this business model spread to the US (please no) and be the future of commercial aviation?

Ryanair Might Stop Growth Due to No Planes
Ryanair has over 200 Boeing 737-800’s, which allows them to save on maintenance, training, parts, etc. However, this also lessens their ability to negotiate effectively if Boeing knows Ryanair is not likely to start buying other aircraft types.
Ryanair is one of Europe’s biggest airlines and they feel they can keep growing. They are so confident about their ability to grow, they are looking to purchase another 200 airplanes and they say Boeing is not working hard enough to make a good deal.
“We see no point in continuing to grow rapidly in a declining yield environment, where our main aircraft partner is unwilling to play its part in our cost reduction programme,” Michael O’Leary, the famous CEO for Ryanair, said about the situation.
O’Leary says they have cash on hand and if Boeing doesn’t want it, they will just pay their stockholders in dividends instead (why not put the money to providing some actual customer service? Nah’¦).
This seems it might just be O’Leary doing what he does, trying to squeeze every last dime out of Boeing. I find it hard to believe that Ryanair would move to having two aircraft types or willing to shell out the money to convert their entire fleet into one. My bet is either they really don’t want to buy 200 planes or if they do, they will all be Boeing 737’s.
